Do you want to read historical cursive documents but find it difficult? "Miwo" is an app that assists such individuals. Simply capture the document with your camera and with the press of a button, the AI will convert the cursive script into modern text. Welcome to the world of historical cursive documents.
The Research Center for Open Data in Humanities (CODH) at ROIS-DS has developed AI cursive recognition technology that can convert cursive script found in images into modern text. The AI Cursive Recognition Smartphone App "Miwo" was created with the aim of making this technology accessible to everyone.
"Miwo" is named after Chapter 14 of "The Tale of Genji," titled "Miotsukushi." Just as "Miotsukushi" was a guiding light for people, the "Miwo" app aims to be your guide through the sea of cursive documents.
- Recommended for:
- - Individuals wanting to read cursive documents
- - Those who need to quickly check the contents of cursive documents
- - People interested in learning cursive script
- - Those seeking assistance in transcribing cursive documents
With the Miwo app, you can:
- Recognize and convert cursive script in images captured by the camera or downloaded from the internet into modern text.
- Display recognized text on the image and show rectangular boxes indicating character positions.
- Correct text if recognition results are incorrect.
- Output recognition results as text for use in other apps.
- Save recognition results within the app for later access.
- Connect with CODH's cursive dataset to search for examples of cursive characters within the app.
Please Note:
- - The AI in the "Miwo" app has been trained on cursive script data from Edo-period publications, resulting in higher accuracy with such documents compared to materials from other periods like manuscripts or ancient texts.
- - Accuracy may be affected by document condition (stains, wormholes, paper patterns) or environmental factors during image capture (lighting, shadows).
- - Cursive characters found on stone monuments or signs are currently not recognizable by the app.
- - The app does not require user registration and does not collect personal information or device identifiers.
- - Images uploaded to the server for cursive recognition and their results are not stored on the server.
- - Respect third-party rights when sharing or publishing content decoded using this app if it contains personal privacy-related information.
